After 18 months in beta, Mojang will officially release Scrolls, their digital collectible card game, today, December 11. Scrolls will be released on Windows and Mac platforms, as well as an Android tablet version. All versions will be priced at $5, with a demo available for Mac and PC on the game’s official website.
Scrolls mixes traditional collectible card game mechanics and structure with a hex-grid battle system adopted from board games and features a story helmed by Penny Arcade’s Jerry Holkins. It will be Mojang’s first official launch of a new game since being acquired by Microsoft earlier this year to the tune of $2.5 billion.
In addition to the PC, Mac and Android versions launching Thursday, an Apple iOS iPad version is already in the works and will be releasing soon as the developer works to get the game on the App Store.
Scrolls should be a cool addition to the now thriving world of CCG games that have gained popularity on tablets. Although it remains to be seen if they can dethrone Blizzard’s Hearthstone as the major CCG of choice, Mojang’s strong track record should be enough to provide an interesting option.
