The long pined for Star Wars space combat simulators Star Wars: X-Wing and Star Wars: TIE Fighter will be getting a digital release on GOG.com according to information dug up on the digital distribution group’s forums. The leaked press releases have since been removed but the ‘net is ablaze with anticipation for what many consider not only some of the best Star Wars games ever made, but the best space combat simulators developed.
GOG.com had been teasing a new major publishing deal and rumor has it that this supposed LucasArts deal will no only put players into DRM-free cockpits but also other classic LucasArts titles like Knights of the Old Republic, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and The Secret of Monkey Island. The deal is planned to be announced tomorrow with both X-Wing and TIE Fighter priced at $9.99
I remember the original X-Wing and TIE Fighter games as two of the pinnacles of PC Gaming in the ’90s. While the Totally Games’ developed series withered into nothing around the time of the prequel movies, the original pair, along with X-Wing vs TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance were the best reasons to own a flight stick. Just the advent of flying against computer controlled pilots in the included combat simulator described many afternoons wasted at my friend’s apartment.
